The Process

The design, fabrication and fitting of orthoses and prostheses are done by certified Orthotists and Prosthetists, working with technicians trained in fabricating these devices.  Physicians, surgeons, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and social workers also are part of the rehab team in order that the most comprehensive care possible is provided to each individual.

Certified Orthotists and Prosthetists have completed an extensive training and certification process focused on patient care, assessment, treatment selection, and device design and fitting. In addition, certifees participate in continuing education programs each year to ensure they remain up-to-date with the latest developments in patient care and technology.

Orthoses:

The process of getting an orthosis usually begins with a prescription provided to the client by a physician. Clients make an appointment with our Orthotist where they will conduct an assessment to determine the client’s needs and goals, and work with the client to determine the best treatment option. They also may consult with the client’s physiotherapist to ensure the device will complement their rehabilitation program.

Depending on the needs of the particular client, they may recommend either a custom fit pre-fabricated orthosis or a custom made orthosis. Prefabricated orthoses come in set sizes can be modified to achieve the best possible fit. Custom orthoses are usually fabricated on-site in our fabrication facility, but can also be centrally fabricated.  They are made by first taking a cast, and later filling it with plaster, to get an exact replica of your limb. For foot orthoses, this includes either a plaster cast or a foam box impression, while other orthoses require a plaster or fiberglass cast. In our fabrication facility, the plaster replicas will be modified, and then the orthoses will be fabricated from the appropriate material.

FOsApproximately two weeks after the initial assessment the orthoses will be ready to be fit and dispensed. Our on-site fabrication facility allows us to modify or adjust these devices at any time to ensure the best possible fit. All orthoses come with a 3 month guarantee over which we will make any necessary adjustments free of charge.

Prostheses:

For the new amputee, the Prosthetist will first see them while they are an inpatient at a hospital or rehabilitation centre. Initially they will fit stump shrinkers, which shape the residual limb, followed by a preparatory prosthesis for the initial rehabilitation process.

For the new amputee whose rehab has adequately progressed, or for an experienced amputee in need of a new prosthesis, the Prosthetist will thoroughly assess the client’s needs and goals and work with them to design the optimal prosthesis for his/her lifestyle. They also may consult with the client’s physiotherapist to ensure the device will complement their rehabilitation program.

The fabrication of a prosthesis begins by taking a plaster mould of the residual limb. From this, a test prosthesis will be fabricated. This is a temporary prosthesis that is modified until maximum comfort and the best possible fit and function is achieved. Once both the client and the Prosthetist are satisfied with the test socket, a process which can take months, a definitive prosthesis is made. Once all final adjustments are made, a cosmetic finishing of the definitive prosthesis is done. Throughout this process, the client works closely with the Prosthetist to perfect the prosthesis, and follow up visits regularly occur.
